$800 stolen from eatery on Ashland Street

A burglar broke into Happy Falafel, a midtown sandwich shop, and stole $800 in cash late Friday.

The unidentified suspect broke the glass front door at the restaurant at about 11:52 p.m.

The suspect was caught on a neighboring business’ surveillance camera, Ashland Police Chief Terry Holderness said. Police describe the suspect as a tall, thin adult male who was wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt and light-colored pants.

Ashland police responded to the report of a burglary at the restaurant, in the 1600 block of Ashland Street, at 7:35 a.m. Saturday.

The man was inside the restaurant for 30 to 40 seconds, Holderness said. He smashed the bottom of the door, crawled inside and took the cash from a bank bag.

Detectives are investigating the case.

“They’ll probably be taking to the owners and showing them the video and seeing if they have any idea of who it might be,” Holderness said.

The case is under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Ashland Police Department at 482-5211.
