'A Taste of Harmony'

The Southern Oregon Sound chapter of Sweet Adelines International will be presenting a novel way to showcase its barbershop harmonies — a concert presented as a television talk show. The women's chorus will stage "A Taste of Harmony" at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Southern Oregon University Department of Theatre Arts building, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland.

The Southern Oregon Sound chorus is a guest on the imaginary TV program, along with a famous chef and the Rogue Valley Harmonizers. Three Southern Oregon University theatre students will perform in the show. Ryan Celeste Holt played the Scientist/Therapist in SOU's 2008 production of "Metamorphoses". Ashley Scallon played Thomasina Coverly in SOU's 2007 production of "Arcadia". Lex Yochim played Vertumnus in SOU's 2008 production of "Metamorphoses".

Martha Segura directs the nearly 30 members of the chorus. Segura sings lead in the quartet "Razzcals," which placed third worldwide in the 2007 Sweet Adelines International competition. She coached "Underage," a Young Women in Harmony quartet, to win the 2005 Rising Star Quartet championship. Segura co-directed the award-winning Mission Valley Chorus in Los Gatos for several years.

The Southern Oregon Sound chorus placed fifth among small choruses at the 2008 Mount 'n Shore regional competition. The men's barbershop chorus, the Rogue Valley Harmonizers, with nearly 60 members, placed fifth in the 2008 Evergreen District Division IV regional competition.

The show is an annual benefit for the Southern Oregon Sound. This year's concert is being held in conjunction with Eat Local Week. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Medford high schools' vocal music department.
