'Sonic Diffusions' at SOU

Southern Oregon University's Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Terry Longshore, as well as the percussion quartet Compás will present "Sonic Diffusions."

The concert is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at the Music Recital Hall on the SOU campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland.

Compás, recognized for its contemporary percussion music, will perform the West Coast premiere of Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic's "Tak-Nara." The work is heavily influenced by the culture and myths of the Canary Islands.

Also on the program, Compás will present Christopher Deane's "Vespertine Formations" for marimba quartet. Deane wrote the piece after observing a flock of birds, their wing motions and choreographed movement.

Following Compás, the Percussion Ensemble will perform the symphonic percussion composition "The Palace of Nine Perfections" by Eric Ewazen. Each of the three movements in the piece depict scenes from a painting by 17th-century artist Yuan Chiang. Other works to be performed are "Apple Blossom" by Peter Garland and "Isu Tauya Pano," a Zimbabwean marimba composition.

SOU graduate Bryan Jeffs, who recently joined SOU's adjunct faculty, will be the featured soloist in Christopher Rouse's "Bonham," which celebrates the legacy of Led Zeppelin's late drummer John "Bonzo" Bonham.

Tickets to Thursday's performance are $5, free for students and are available at the Music Box Office or by calling 541-552-6101. For more information, see www.sou.edu/music.
