'Taste Of Guanajuato' at the Armory

Ashland's long relationship with Guanajuato will take a new turn July 5 at 5:30 p.m. when Ashland Rotary Club's first annual "Taste of Guanajuato" takes place at the Historic Ashland Armory.

A project of the Club's World Community Service Committee, the event will raise funds for a government-sponsored self-help housing program in Guanajuato, Mexico, where $650.00 can be leveraged to provide all the building materials necessary for a family to build their first home.

"This program is a dream come true for everyone involved," said event's co-chair Angelica Zavalor Ruppe. "For the people who have never had their own home, for their children, but especially for me. I am from Guanajuato and I have seen the difference this program makes."

Ruppe came to the Valley many years ago as a graduate student and has lived here ever since. She's now the chief financial officer at Clinica de Valle. Also providing leadership for the event is co-chair Brian Conrad, who moved to the valley recently after years of living and working in Mexico.

"Taste of Guanajuato" will feature well-known songstress Emy Phelps, a performance by Ballet Folklorico, gourmet Mexican food, silent and live auctions and a chance to hear from local dignitaries from Guanajuato. Officers of the Guanajuato Rotary Club, which is partnering with the Ashland Rotary, will also be on hand.
