'The Playful Violin'

The third in the First United Methodist Church's Organ Restoration Concert Series is "The Playful Violin," featuring Robert Dubow with Jennifer Schloming on piano. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at 175 North Main St., Ashland.

The historic Reuter Organ was installed in 1929 and boasts 1,071 pipes. The organ was recently repaired, cleaned, and tuned by Hochhalter, Inc. of Salem. The bill was paid with money borrowed from other church funds. Proceeds from the concert series are to repay those funds.

Dubow began studying violin at age 7 with his mother, a former professional violinist. He attended music schools in the New York City area, including the Manhattan School of Music. Summer training included the Aspen Music Festival and the International Academic Chamber Music Academy of Chamber Music in Sermoneta, Italy.

Dubow was concertmaster with the Jalapa Symphony in Mexico. He spent 17 years in Los Angeles recording movie and TV soundtracks. His credits include "Star Trek IV," "Little Mermaid," "Little Shop of Horrors" and may others. A Rogue Valley resident since 1989, he played 10 years as concertmaster of the Rogue Valley Symphony. Dubow enjoyed 12 seasons in Greenshows at OSF. He teaches in his private studio.

Schloming is a pianist and musical director in the Rogue Valley. She is accompanist, organist and pianist at First United Methodist in Ashland. She has played or worked in the production of many musicals, concerts, and other venues throughout the area.

Schloming's recent performances include accompanying vocal concerts for Madeline Able Kerns and Pauline Sullivan. Schloming is musical director for Michael Hume's play "Dick Whittington and His Amazing Cat" at SOU in February 2009, and Oregon Cabaret Theater's production of "The Putnam County 25th Annual Spelling Bee" next summer.

The next concert in the series is The Delusions of Grandeur barbershop quartet, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13.

Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for students. Tickets are available at Paddington Station, Ashland; The Grocery Outlet, Medford; or at the door.
