A day without a Starbucks

If you plan on stopping for your late afternoon Starbucks latte downtown or on Siskiyou today, you'll have to detour to the Albertsons store.

Nearly all 7,100 Starbucks stores are closing today for three hours of employee training, said T.J. Artale, shift lead for Starbucks at 120 E. Main St.

His store will close at 5 p.m. today and will reopen at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

"We're doing this to get back to our roots, which is all about the customer," said Artale. "So we'll receive training on customer service, steaming milk and making the perfect coffee drink every time."

He said Starbucks nationwide just installed upgrades to the internal workings of their espresso machines and everyone will be trained regarding the upgrade.

The Starbucks at 1474 Siskiyou Blvd., which normally stays open until 9 p.m., will also close for training at 5 p.m. and will reopen at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The Starbucks inside the Albertsons store on 2301 Ashland St. will be open. Manager Kasey Swails said her store will receive training at a later date that hasn't been set yet.

Starbucks, which employs 135,000 baristas nationwide, announced 600 layoffs last week. None of the three Starbucks stores in Ashland were affected.
