After Ashland

Rachel Sohl, Brown University senior rugby

Sohl helped the Brown women's rugby team beat University of North Carolina 34-0 Friday in a women's Division I round of 16 playoff game.

Sohl, who plays hooker for the Bears, has been a key contributor all season. She scored the first try of the game in Brown's 29-0, Ivy League championship-clinching win over No. 15 Dartmouth on April 7. The Bears advanced to the national semifinals last season.

Jenna Wixon-Genack, Stanford University freshman lightweight rower

Wixon-Genack, who graduated from Ashland High in 2008, is already rowing for Stanford's lightweight eight crew. The former Ashland Rowing Club member helped the Cardinal complete a solid weekend on the Charles River in Boston on Sunday, as Stanford's eights and fours boats rowed to a sweep over No. 7 Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The eights crew that Wixon-Genack rows for used a strong finish to beat MIT by 11 seconds.

The victory over MIT came a day after Stanford, ranked No. 3, took down No. 4 Harvard in a much more competitive race. Stanford's eight crossed the finish line in 7:14.6, just ahead of Harvard (7:16.2).

Wixon-Genack honed her skill in a boat with the Ashland Rowing Club from 2003 until 2008. During that time, she rowed in a pair boat that finished second at the Northwest Regionals and fifth at the USRowing Youth National Championships.

Wixon-Genack also made the USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll in 2008 and was an AHS valedictorian.

Stephanie Johns, Portland State University junior golfer

Johns shot an opening-round 78 as the Vikings finished the first day of the Big Sky Conference Golf Championship tied for third, 14 shots behind first-place Northern Arizona.

Johns held a brief lead in the early going before struggling through five bogeys down the stretch. The 54-hole tournament continues today and wraps up Wednesday. The Big Sky tourney comes a week after Johns was named a first-team Big Sky all-star.

Johns leads the Vikings in scoring average (77.28) and ranks third in the league. The two-time Big Sky Player of the Week was the Vikings' scoring leader in five of nine regular season tournaments. Johns also has the best single round (70), 36-hole tournament (149) and 54-hole tournament (225) scores by a PSU golfer this season.

Sam Gaviglio, Oregon State University freshman pitcher

Gaviglio pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings of relief for the Beavers, who dropped two of three games to Southern California over the weekend. The short but solid outings dropped Gaviglio's ERA to 3.77 in 11 appearances for the Beavers, who are ranked No. 19 in the Collegiate Baseball poll and No. 17 in the Baseball American Top 25 poll.

Through 32 games (23-9, 8-4 Pac-10) Gaviglio is tied for first on the team for wins (5-1), ranks fourth in innings pitched (28 2-3), fourth in strikeouts (22) and fifth in opponent's batting average (.218).
