After the fire

Fire officials are breathing easier after a blaze that scorched 153 acres south of Ashland was stabilized.

"We got lucky," Jackson County Fire Chief Dan Marshall said this morning. "It was a combination of chance, being lucky or good work, but I'll take it."

Seven crews of 20 firefighters worked throughout the night to stabilize the blaze. In the morning, only smoldering earth and charred trees could be seen on hills along Timberlake Road.

"Our biggest fear was that the fire would jump the line over Tolman Creek Road," Marshall said.
