Agent walks to raise money for Haiti relief

A local insurance agent says he'll walk 24 hours to help raise money for victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Russ Schweikert of Ashland Insurance's Medford branch will start his walkathon at 5 p.m. Feb. 5 in front of Southern Oregon University in Ashland. He said he'll head north on Highway 99, walking for 50 minutes every hour and resting for 10 minutes.

He hopes to raise $2,000 for Haitian relief efforts through pledges per mile or lump-sum donations.

Schweikert said in an e-mail that he's holding the walkathon "to raise donations for Northwest Medical Teams and to promote awareness that one person can be a catalyst for people to make a difference. That one person can do almost nothing, but with a little from all, much can be achieved."

Friends, family and coworkers will meet Schweikert at designated locations hourly to deliver food, water and fresh socks and to collect any money donated along the route.

Schweikert said at the 12-hour point, he'll turn around and walk back to SOU.

Those wishing to help Schweikert's cause may drop off or mail donations to Ashland Insurance at 585 A St., Ashland, OR 97520, or Ashland Insurance Medford Branch, 801 O'Hare Parkway, Medford, OR 97504.
