AHS boys, girls sweep three-way swim meet

Depth proved to be the difference as the Ashland High boys and girls swim teams both swept a three-way meet Tuesday at the Southern Oregon University pool.

The Ashland boys had no trouble besting both Crater (142-94) and Phoenix (161-57), while the Ashland girls needed every last point to pull out their sweep, 105-103 over Crater and 109-105 over Phoenix.

Gus Simms and Lucas Opgenorth led the way for the Grizz boys. Simms finished first and set a school record in the 100 butterfly — he touched the wall in 57.63 seconds — while also pulling out the 500 freestyle (5:20.79) and helping Ashland claim first in both the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

Opgenorth won the 200 freestyle (1:58.49), took second in the 100 freestyle (52.16) and helped Ashland claim titles in both the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.

Also for the AHS boys, Brendan Reece-Sullivan won the 50 freestyle in 28.73 and Jake Gavin won the 200 individual medley in 2:23.28.

On the girls side, Ashland's Livy Krevitz, Eliana Pool and Sheralyn Shumway each pulled out key victories. Krevitz won the 200 freestyle (2:33.09) and finished second in the 100 freestyle (1:08.06), Pool won the 500 freestyle (6:37.50) and helped Ashland win the 400 freestyle relay and Shumway won the 50 freestyle (27.74).

Also for the Grizz girls, Hannah Loop won the 100 freestyle in 1:18.57 and Victoria Kosct won the 50 freestyle in 36.35.

Ashland next hosts a four-way meet Saturday against Eagle Point, Mazama and Bend.
