AHS favorite, underdog off to state

A favorite to advance to at least the semifinals and an underdog who needs an upset just to make it out of the first round will be representing Ashland High School at the OSAA Class 5A state wrestling meet Friday and Saturday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

The favorite is sophomore 195-pounder Mason Montgomery, who was ranked No. 1 most of the season before suffering his first loss in the District 4 championship match — a four-overtime thriller against No. 3-ranked Trevor Roberts of Mountain View.

Montgomery is 20-1 and appears to have a clear path to the semifinals, where he could face top-ranked, and undefeated (18-0), Brian Wojahn of Wilson. Montgomery is set to face 14th-ranked Daniel Wallberg of Benson in the first round and either fifth-ranked Tim Ferrell of Lebanon or fifth-ranked Jeremy Funk of Sandy in the second round.

On the opposite side of the 16-man bracket is second-ranked Jackson Soto of West Albany, Roberts, and sixth-ranked Ryan Jurgens of Sherwood.

Ashland sophomore Cody Eisenberg, ranked No. 13 in the state, will be looking for a first-round shocker in the 220-pound bracket after placing third two weeks ago in the District 4 meet. He will face third-ranked Riley Sipe (19-6) of Dallas, with the winner slated to face sixth-ranked Andy Morrison of Cleveland or 12th-ranked Connor York of Milwaukie in the quarterfinals.

Eisenberg advanced to the semifinals at districts, lost, then earned two more wins to clinch a spot in the state meet. All his district victories were by pin, including two against 14th-ranked D.J. Gray of Springfield.

Also on Eisenberg's side of the bracket is top-ranked Jevon Painter of Marshfield and fifth-ranked Steely Smith of West Albany. Painter and Smith will face off in the first round. On the bottom half of the bracket is second-ranked Ben Rebischke of Dallas and fourth-ranked Keaton Scavone of Lebanon.
