AHS student awarded travel scholarship

Ashland High School student Erin Keoppen has been named a Global Citizen Scholarship recipient by EF Educational Tours and will travel on a 10-day, all-expenses-paid tour to Berlin in July.

Keoppen, the daughter of Kim and John Keoppen, was one of 20 scholarship recipients chosen from among hundreds of applicants from across the United States.

EF's Global Citizen Scholarship encourages high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors to think about their roles in local and global communities and how their actions affect the people around them. To be considered, this year's applicants submitted a video, digital media project or essay responding to the question, What defines your identity as a Global Citizen?

"A citizen of the world is not only expressed by where I am from, but the prospect of where I am going," Keoppen concluded in her essay.

Keoppen also was recently chosen for the High School Journalism Institute, an eight-day intensive journalism training at Oregon State University in which students conduct interviews, write stories and blogs, take pictures and video and publish a 32-page tab newspaper. The institute is sponsored by The Oregonian.
