Airport sees record number of passengers in July

Passenger activity soared to new heights in July as the Medford airport broke its all-time single-month record.

The 66,388 travelers passing through the gates roared past the August 2007 standard of 65,427 as well as the July mark of 64,811 set in 2010.

"July has always been important to us," said Airport Director Bern Case. "Leisure travel and summer vacations are always big, but we were up more than 4,000 passengers over last year. It was just a bumper month."

The 6.4 percent year-over-year increase was the largest since a 14.6 percent bump in April 2010.

Delta Connection, which flies between the Rogue Valley and Salt Lake City, turned in a 15.8 percent increase during the month, while Allegiant Air saw a 14.1 percent gain and United Express posted a 10.5 percent gain. Horizon Air, the most active carrier in Southern Oregon, which topped 28,000 passengers last July, reported an 0.2 percent decrease to 27,994.

"We had excellent service during the month with Allegiant's seasonal aircraft going to Oakland and Mesa," Case said.

Allegiant will cut its flights to Oakland after this week — resuming again in early 2013, which means August won't likely threaten last month's mark.

"I think August will be good," Case said. "It could be a monthly record, but I don't think it will be an overall record."
