Allred qualifies for Nationwide tournament

RALEIGH, N.C. — Jason Allred blistered the field Monday, shooting a 10-under-par 61 and qualifying for the Nationwide Tour's Rex Hospital Open.

The four-round tournament begins Thursday.

Allred, a former Ashland High player who lives in Scottsdale, Ariz., had an eagle, eight birdies and nine pars on his card.

His lowest pursuer was five shots back at 66.

The round was a continuation of fine play by Allred.

A week earlier, he was the low man in the first stage of U.S. Open qualifying at Battle Creek Country Club in Battle Creek, Mich. He fashioned a 7-under 65. His final qualifying round will be at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland in June.

Between those two rounds, Allred placed third in a Gateway Tour event in Arizona on Friday. He was 12 under for three rounds, sandwiching a pair of 67s around a 70. He earned $4,000.
