Anderson throws two-hit shutout as Ashland splits with Crater

Max Anderson threw a two-hit gem in the first game, but the rest of the Pilots' pitching staff struggled in the nightcap as Ashland settled for a Zone 4 split with Crater in an American Legion A doubleheader Wednesday at North Mountain Park.

Anderson's nine-strikeout, two-walk performance powered the Pilots (6-4) to a 7-1 win in Game 1. In the second game, Crater overcame a 4-2 deficit to win 7-4, thanks in part to seven walks issued by the Pilots.

Anderson improved to 2-0 on the year after holding Crater to one unearned run. He worked with a lead throughout after Billy Hansen and Brent Hegdahl hit back-to-back singles in the first; both came around to score on a fielding error.

Hansen went 2-for-3 and scored twice, Hegdahl went 1-for-3 and scored twice and Ethan Schlecht went 1-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Pilots' offense in the opener.

Crater jumped on top early in Game 2, then scored five runs on three hits, including Mike Macuk's two-run single, in the fifth to take control.

Ashland starter Sam Taylor was tagged with the loss after giving up two earned runs on three hits and five walks in two innings.

Ashland was led at the plate in Game 2 by Hegdahl (2-for-3, one run), Anderson (2-for-4, RBI) and Taylor, who delivered a two-run single to give the Pilots the lead in the bottom of the first.

Crater starter Bryce Crawford surrendered three earned runs on nine hits to gain the complete-game victory.
