Andrew Blocher receives rank of Eagle Scout

Andrew Blocher, a member of Boy Scout Troop 112 chartered to the Ashland Lions Club, was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Eagle Scout is the highest rank offered by the Boy Scouts of America.

Blocher started off as an eager Tiger Cub in Pack 841 in Parker, Colo. His family moved to Ashland in July 2005 and Blocher join Ashland Cub Scout Pack 117 where he earned his Arrow of Light Award.

Blocher bridged to Troop 112 where he earned his Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star and Life ranks.

He was elected to Order of the Arrow, Boy Scouts National Honor Society, where he served as lodge vice-chief of activities for two terms.

He was on Troop 112's High Adventure Crew to Philmont Scout Ranch in 2008 and he attended Boy Scouts 100th Birthday National Jamboree in 2010. Blocher was one of 28 scouts in the U.S. chosen to attend the international Boy Scout forum in Japan in 2011.

Blocher's Eagle Scout project was to help the City of Ashland design and build a walking trail in the newly cleared area near Ashland Creek Pond adjacent to the bike path. The trail meanders along Ashland Creek, allowing users to enjoy the natural beauty in this previously hidden area.

Under the guidance of Ashland Parks Department Division Manager Jeff McFarland, Blocher organized a crew of scouts, parents, football teammates and Ashland Woodlands and Trails Association members to remove the root balls of overgrown blackberry bushes. This was followed by another crew shaping the trail to a 5-foot width.

Finally, they laid weed-barrier fabric and spread decomposed granite on the trail. The final jobs were to cement a post into the ground to attach a trail sign.

Blocher is a Senior at Ashland High School where this past football season he was starting linebacker.

He was named defensive player of the game two weeks in a row and was chosen Round Table player of the game on Senior night. Blocher maintains a 3.98 GPA and is National Honor Society President.

Andrew is the son of Denise and Ron Blocher of Ashland.
