APD adds drop box for old prescription medicine

People can drop off their unwanted or out-of-date prescription drugs anytime at the Ashland Police Department, thanks to a new deposit box in the lobby at 1155 E. Main St.

Recology Ashland Sanitary partnered with Ashland police to install the secure box, designed to help keep drugs away from children and out of landfills, the water supply and waste treatment systems.

The following items will be accepted:

  • Prescriptions
  • Over-the-counter medications
  • Medication samples
  • Medications for pets
  • Ointments
  • Lotions
  • Liquid medication in glass or leak-proof containers

Items that won't be accepted are needles, thermometers, bloody or infectious waste, medications from businesses or clinics, hydrogen peroxide, aerosol cans or inhalers, food items or supplements.

The best time to drop off items is during business hours when the box will be monitored and emptied, police say, though the deposit box will be available 24/7.

Those who need more information may call Deputy Chief Corey Falls at 541-482-5211.
