Ashland boys win district tennis title again

EUGENE — Defending district boys tennis champion Ashland wasn't considered the favorite entering the Class 5A District 1 seven-school tournament.

Led by the top-seeded doubles team of Josh Harris and Grant Kahn, the Grizzlies successfully defended its title Friday at the Eugene Swim and Tennis Club.

"It was a surprise for us," said Ashland coach Dick Streng, about winning this year's team championship. "Last year we were pretty loaded. This year, we played our best tennis at the end."

And no one played better for the Grizzlies than Harris, who was a doubles runner-up as a junior at last year's district tournament, and freshman Kahn. The pair cruised through Friday's semifinals and finals with straight set victories — only losing a total of five games.

"They played strong and were consistent," said Streng, about his top doubles team. "They were aggressive on their returns and served extremely good. They had no let down on the four sets they played."

Harris and Kahn defeated Churchill's Brett Bell and Zach Konnie, 6-1 and 6-1, in the finals. The Grizzly team put away teammates Carl Gorbett and Ian Murray in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-1.

Gorbett, a junior, and the senior Murray dropped the third place match, 7-5, 6-1, but will nonetheless advance to the state tournament.

Harris won the consolation doubles title with partner Min-oh Suh at last year's state tournament.

Ashland sophomore Max Burt finished fourth in singles to garner a state tournament berth.

Burt lost to eventual district champion Neu Nipatasaj of Marist in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-1. In the third-place match, Springfield's Rasmus Alstermark got the best of Burt, 6-4, 6-1.

The Class 5A state championships begin Thursday at the Portland Tennis Center.

Girls Tennis

At Eugene, Ashland's Hanna Greenberg and River Davis lived up to their billing in the Class 5A District 1 tournament at the Eugene Swim and Tennis Club.

The top-seeded Greenberg and Davis captured the district championship by defeating No. 2 seed Heidi Boesl and Brittney Wilson of Marshfield in the finals, 6-2, 6-4.

In singles, Laurel Sager of Ashland was defeated by No. 1 Brittany Banna of Churchill in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-1. The fourth-seeded Sager rebounded to win the third-place match 6-2, 6-3 against Emily Ely of Churchill.

Churchill edged Ashland 31-29, for the team title.

The Greenberg-Davis team and Sager will advance to the three-day Class 5A state tournament beginning Thursday at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton.
