Ashland doubles teams come through in win over S. Medford

Ashland won three of four doubles matches and split the four singles showdowns to defeat South Medford 5-3 in a nonconference girls tennis tilt Wednesday at Hunter Park.

Livy Kevitz's hard-fought victory over Makenzie Kriz at No. 4 singles put the Grizzlies over the top in their first dual meet of the 2009 season. She won 6-4, 7-6, avoiding a third set with a 7-3 victory in the tiebreaker.

Ashland also received a dominating performance by its No. 2 doubles tandem of Katie Patton and Emily Minasian, who teamed up to beat Laura Eledge and Leslie Kobinsky, 6-0, 6-0. In the most competitive doubles match of the day, Ashland's Zena Shelton and Caroline Vernat beat Ellie Ternando and Amber Savage, 6-3, 6-4.

South Medford, a Class 6A school, won the top two singles matches handily, but the 5A Grizzlies proved to have superior depth in winning the bottom two spots in straight sets.
