Ashland Elks members hold holiday lunch for Valley veterans

For more than 20 years members of the Ashland Elks Club have been bringing good will and cheers to Southern Oregon's veterans.

The Elks held a holiday lunch Thursday for dozens of participants in the Veterans in Transition program at the Veterans Affairs Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center & Clinics in White City.

"It's more than the gifts. It's about getting the spirit of Christmas and being with friends," veteran Mark Nichols said.

World War II veteran Jimmy Johnson, 87, said, "It's great to get together with the 'old bros.'"

Elk Rhonda Brustol, has been visiting the VA SORCC — formerly known as the DOM — since 1986.

"This is a very good feeling day," she said after helping to distribute gifts and food to the veterans. "This is a bright light in these guys lives."
