Ashland girls, boys tennis teams romp

Ashland swept all the completed matches in a 7-0 girls tennis win over Klamath Union Monday at Hunter Park.

No. 1 singles was suspended by rain with the Grizzlies' Laurel Sager trailing Marisa Doveri.

Ashland's Emily Minasian won 6-0, 6-0 over Kiana Gordon at No. 2 singles, and the No. 2 doubles tandem of Hannah Greenberg and River Davis posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kami Hoffheims and Kirstin Doveri.

Boys Tennis

Ashland won all six contested events and was ahead in two other singles matches that were suspended due to poor weather at the Southern Oregon University courts in a 6-0 triumph over Klamath Union.

The Southern Oregon wrestling team had three individuals named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association/NAIA All-Academic Team.

Tommie Hooper, Kyle Wirkuty and Justin Mills all earned the honor for the Raiders. As a team, SOU finished ninth with a GPA of 3.02.

To earn the honor as an individual, student-athletes must qualify for the national tournament with at least a 3.25 and All-Americans must have at least a 3.0.

Hooper, who finished fifth at 157 pounds to earn his third All-American honor, had a GPA of 3.65, which ranks third on the national list. Also at the national's, Hooper was honored for having the most pins in the least amount of time. Hooper had three pins in a total of 1:52.

Wirkuty, a national runner-up at 141 and a two-time All-American, finished sixth on the list with a 3.49 GPA, and Mills had a GPA of 3.3.

Track and Field

Southern Oregon junior Ryan Sorenson has been named the Cascade Conference Red Lion Runner of the Week.

Sorenson is coming off an impressive weekend at the Willamette Invitational. The junior turned in an NAIA "A" qualifying time of 30:40.45 in the 10,000 meters. The time is the fastest in the Cascade Conference this year, the second fastest in the NAIA and the second fastest in school history.

Sorenson was one of three Raiders to earn the "A" standard in the 10,000 at the meet. Zach Elliott, from Crater, finished with a time of 30:50.64 and Ryan Ghelfi clocked 31:03.63.

Southern Oregon travels to NCAA Division II power Chico State this weekend.
