Ashland High's Schein loses in semis, to play for third

Ashland High's Casey Schein lost to Allison Bostrom of Crescent Valley, 6-1, 6-2, Friday in the semifinals of the OSAA Class 5A girls state tennis tournament at the Portland Tennis Center.

The second-seeded Schein advanced to the semis with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Charlotte Fisher of Crescent Valley, but couldn't keep pace with Bostrom, the No. — seed, who survived a three-set battle with Churchill's Brittany Banna in Thursday's opening round. Schein, a junior, will play unseeded Katie Edwards of Century in Saturday's third-place singles match.

Edwards beat fourth-seeded Barb Sneckner in the quarterfinals before losing to top-seeded Ilaria Alessi of West Albany in the semis.

Also representing Ashland on Saturday will be Casey Schein's sister, Maggie Schein, a freshman, who won two pro-set matches in the consolation bracket to advance to the consolation finals, where she will face Banna. The younger Schein beat Alisha Hansen of Wilsonville 8-2 and Whitney Lewis of Thurston 8-1.

Ashland's doubles team of Christi Gay and Chloe Deckwar won its first-round consolation match before falling in the semis to Jessica Eldridge and Hannah Hicks of Hermiston, 8-6.
