Ashland High School students selected for Guanajuato trip

Two Ashland High School students will soon be traveling to Guanajuato, Mexico, to participate in the weeklong celebration of the city's annual Festival of San Juan that includes the traditional opening of the floodgates of the La Olla Dam.

The students are Emma Harding, a senior, daughter of Sheri Harding, and Madison Knox, a junior, daughter of Mark and Nora Knox.

They will be in Guanajuato June 15-25, representing Ashland and participating in several official functions during the week of all-day activities that include concerts, art exhibits, book fairs, sports, folk dances and flower shows. Guanajuato and Ashland celebrated the 40th anniversary of their sister city relationship last year.

Ashland Councilman Greg Lemhouse will join the girls in Guanajuato as the official representative of Mayor John Stromberg.

The students will speak about Ashland at several events and sing songs in Spanish at the city's official functions and at various civic and service clubs.

Immediately after returning, they will help welcome a group of Guanajuato citizens who will be coming to Ashland to participate in its annual Fourth of July festivities.

The visitors will include a member of the Guanajuato City Council, the Guanajuato festival queen and her mother, and the city's director of cultural affairs.

They will march in the Ashland parade and participate in a week of activities that highlight the city and its environs, and attend city, university and service club receptions.
