Ashland hosts a weekend of fine food

The Ashland Chamber of Commerce is hosting its first ever Food and Wine Classic Nov. 2-4. The event boasts three days of local food, wine tasting and workshops and starts on Friday with a luncheon at the Ashland Springs Hotel where local chefs who will compete in the Chef's Showdown will be introduced. The showdown will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Historic Ashland Armory as chefs prepare creative holiday dishes. The panel of judges will include celebrity chef Cory Schreiber, owner of Portland's Wildwood restaurant, and renowned cookbook author.

Workshops for the event will be hosted by Monet restaurant, Rising Sun Farms, Paddington Station, and Waterstone Spa. The workshops will cover food, wine, health, and kitchen gadgets.

Wine tasting tours will be offered by Ashland Wine Tours and Main Street Tours. In addition, the Ashland Independent Film Festival will present the documentary "How to Cook Your Life," Friday evening at 6:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. This film features best-selling food author, cook, and Zen priest Edward Espe Brown. These two special screenings will benefit the film festival and the film will continue to show at the theatre throughout the week.

Pre-registration is required for all workshops. Sign up sheets will be at Friday's luncheon. Ticket holders can choose which workshop they will attend. All workshops will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The workshops will be repeated on Saturday at the same time and venues. Sign up at the Armory on Saturday.

Local hotels such as the Ashland Springs Hotel, the Stratford Inn, and the Plaza Inn Suites are offering "classic" packages with deals on rooms, meal vouchers, and tickets to the event. Contact the hotels for special packages.
