Unclaimed Ashland jackpot

The winner of a $1.3 million Powerball ticket purchased in Ashland failed to redeem the prize, causing the money to revert to the state Economic Development Fund.

The unclaimed ticket-buyer is not alone. Oregon State Lottery officials say it's typical for $4 million to $5 million in prizes to go unclaimed each year. Since 1985, the state has received more than $80.5 million in unclaimed prizes. Winning ticket-holders have one year to redeem their tickets. After that, the money goes back to the state for economic development and other projects. Since 1985, the state has awarded $13 billion in prizes to lottery players.

Woman accused in baby's death

An Oregon woman has been accused of causing her baby's death by rolling on top of him during her sleep.

Coral Aura Evans, 26, was charged with criminally negligent homicide in the death of her 5-week-old son, Cole, said District Attorney Brad Berry of Yamhill County. Evans was released from the county jail after posting bail, the McMinnville News-Register reported Tuesday.

Berry said Evans rolled onto the child while was sharing a bed with the boy and the father, Cory Hutchens, on March 30.

Berry said the woman was intoxicated at the time. He added that he reviewed an array of medical, laboratory and law enforcement reports before deciding to file the charge.

Evans told investigators she remembers Hutchens awakening her and asking about the child's whereabouts, Berry said. Evans said she was uncertain where he was, but thought maybe she had rolled over onto him. The couple discovered the child on the mattress where she had been lying, Berry said. Emergency medical personnel took the baby to Providence Newberg Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
