Ashland Kiwanis rewards fifth-grade essay writers

For the second year, the Ashland Kiwanis Club sponsored an essay contest for fifth-grade students in Ashland’s elementary schools. Last year’s topic was about patriotism. This year students were asked to choose their favorite American President and write an essay of 1,000 words or less.

The first-place winner for each fifth-grade class received a $50 gift certificate to the Tree House Bookstore in Ashland, with the second place winner receiving a $20 gift certificate. Participating elementary schools this year were Bellview and Walker.

Essays are turned into the students’ homeroom teacher, and the teachers worked with the Kiwanis Club to select the first- and second-place finishers at each school.
