Ashland Middle School students record CD

Mukombe Marimba ClubAshland Middle School music students recently recorded a CD, which they will release at their spring concert next Friday.

The Mukombe Marimba Club's Tsokoshata Ensemble will release a CD next Friday at its spring concert.

The professional recording, engineered by Robert Di Chiro of The Grove Recording Studios, includes traditional Zimbabwean music, as well as Mexican folktunes and other modern music played on western-style concert marimbas.

The Tsokoshata group is made up of seventh- and eighth-grade students from Ashland Middle School who have been meeting twice a week at 7:15 a.m. since the fall of 2007.

This is the first professional recording for most of these students. One eighth grader was part of the original Tsokoshata group that recorded the club's first CD two years ago. The group's name, Tsokoshata, means "bad monkey" in the Zimbabwean Shona language.

The Mukombe Marimba Club's spring concert, as well as a CD signing party, takes place Friday, March 14, at 7 p.m., in the Ashland Middle School Commons.
