Ashland police make 5 DUII arrests in 3 days

Ashland police arrested five people in three days for driving under the influence of intoxicants.

Friday through Sunday yielded an "above average" number of DUII arrests, said Lt. Corey Falls with the Ashland Police Department.

All five drivers had blood-alcohol levels over the legal limit of .08 and were between the ages of 24 and 33. One of the drivers was a Southern Oregon University student, according to police reports.

Lt. Falls said police aren't aware of any parties or events occurring last weekend that could have contributed to the spike. They didn't increase patrols or institute a drunken driving saturation force over the weekend, he said.

Last year, Ashland police arrested 148 people for DUII, about 12 per month.

Officers are monitoring this year's data, but it's too early to tell whether there has been a significant rise in DUII cases, Falls said.

"DUIs are always a problem," he said. "We always look to enforce DUI laws."
