Ashland's Roupp named SSC player of the year

Nate Roupp was quite a presence for the Ashland boys soccer team.

At 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, the senior midfielder controlled the middle of the field and had a foot in 26 Grizzlies' goals this season.

"Nate is a great player," Crater coach Chris Gallegos said. "Guys with the same skills could not keep up because of his size. He would give them a good bump. On top of that, his soccer ability was definitely top notch. He was kind of fun to watch. When he receives the ball, he can make a lot happen."

Roupp, who helped lead Ashland to its first state title game appearance, scored 16 goals and 10 assists this season and was recently was named the Southern Sky Conference player of the year on a list dominated by fellow Grizzlies.

"He controls a large radius around him, and that's an important piece," said Ashland coach Brad Roupp, Nate's father. "People always say he looks like a horse out there."

Nate Roupp joined goalkeeper Weston Overland, forwards Simon Linsday and Adam Pavlich, center fullback Tias Fitzpatrick and defender Derek Owens-Oas as Ashland's first-team selections.

Pavlich, the only junior on the first team, had 16 goals and four assists while Linsday added 11 goals and six assists for Ashland, which finished 15-2-1 overall and 8-0 in the SSC.

Anchored by Overland, the starting Grizzlies defense did not allow a single goal in conference play. Ashland allowed only one goal in eight SSC games, that coming late against Mazama.

"That's an outstanding accomplishment," coach Roupp said. "I was disappointed only two of our defenders made first team because all of them did such a great job this year."

Crater (8-7-1, 6-2 SSC) sent three seniors to the first team in defender Travis Robbins and midfielders Elias Rangel and Alan Silva.

Robbins, though recognized on defense, was strong offensively as well for the Comets with nine goals and four assists.

"Travis was an absolute athlete, absolute leader," Gallegos said. "I wish I had 10 of him. He's definitely the guy who kept us in games offensively and defensively. Hardly anyone could contain him."

Rangel had four goals and five assists while Silva added two goals, one coming in Crater's 3-2 loss to Hillsboro in the second-round of the Class 5A playoffs, and three assists.

Eagle Point senior defender John Navarro earned first team mention. The Eagles finished the year 6-6-2 and 2-6 in the SSC. "He's the one we looked to in the back," Eagle Point coach Derek Dougherty said. "Without him, the year would have been very difficult.

"His speed and determination is what helped him be a strong leader."

Mazama's Peter Roby was named coach of the year.
