Ashland's Senestraro resigns as baseball coach

Ashland High head baseball coach Don Senestraro, who led the Grizzlies to the program's only state title in 2008, has resigned and will be replaced by assistant Paul Westhelle, the school announced Friday.

Senestraro took over for Jason Robustelli in 2005 and guided the Grizzlies to the Class 5A state semifinals four years in a row, including two state championship game appearances. Ashland also won four straight league titles under the former Ashland Little League and Babe Ruth coach.

"More important than coach Senestraro's competitive success, he is a total class act that truly cares about kids," AHS athletic director Karl Kemper said. "He is an outstanding role model who has represented our community in the most positive way possible."

Also stepping down for Ashland is longtime assistant coach John Schroeder, who also was an assistant under Robustelli.

Westhelle has previously coached the freshmen and junior varsity teams.
