Ashland teen back at home after recovering from crash

Staff reports

An Ashland teen who suffered head and spleen injuries in a car crash Jan. 2 has gone home from the hospital.

Maxwell Gordon, 17, an Ashland High School senior who made all-conference defensive back on the Grizzlies football team, was released from Rogue Valley Medical Center on Thursday afternoon, said his aunt, Helena Caya, who came from Colorado to help the family. Related stories —

“We are so proud of Max for fighting,” she said.

Max was injured and his brother, Nicholas Gordon, 20, was killed in a three-car crash Jan. 2 on Highway 62 near Eagle Point. The brothers were returning from a ski trip to Mount Bachelor and Nicholas was passing a car when he swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle and lost control.

Max was in critical condition on a ventilator and heavily sedated after the crash. Max's mother, Michelle, said his teammates and friends from school visited his hospital room and decorated it with posters they made.
