Ashland water polo teams roll to sweep

The Ashland boys and girls water polo teams dominated a Southern Conference tournament at the Southern Oregon University pool over the weekend, as both pounded North Eugene and Marist to remain undefeated in league play heading into this weekend's district tournament.

The Ashland boys (9-1 overall, 6-0 SC), led by Wynn Michael and Forrest Kollar, throttled North Eugene 16-3 on Friday and Marist 24-5 on Saturday. Kollar scored five goals in each match and Michaels scored five times against Marist and three times against North Eugene.

Also for the Grizzlies, Jake Gavin had 10 steals against North Eugene and scored five goals against Marist, Lucas Opgenorth scored five goals against North Eugene and goalkeeper Willis Plummer had 10 blocks against North Eugene and five against Marist.

"They stayed at a very solid level," Ashland head coach Christie Gilmore said. "They're on it. Nobody got in their way. They did what they were supposed to do and left room for all the (reserves) to be able to get in."

The Ashland girls (9-0, 6-0), led by Smith Freeman, Calli Walker and Carlie Santee, beat North Eugene 10-4 and Marist 16-4.

Freeman scored five goals against North Eugene and four against Marist, Walker had six goals over the weekend and Santee had 20 saves against North Eugene and 10 saves plus two goals against Marist.

The Grizz girls also received a lift from Sarah Kasiah, who scored two gaols against Marist.

"They played really well," Gilmore said of the Ashland girls. "A couple have been sick all week but the three main girls played really well and as so long as we can keep them healthy we're good to go."

Ashland next travels to Eugene for this weekend's district tournament.

The Grizz boys and girls both must finish in the top two in order to advance to the sub-state tournament the following week.
