Ashland wrestling team to host dual

The Ashland High wrestling team hosts Cascade Christian at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain Avenue Gym, the Grizzlies' first home dual in five years.

Admission is free. Five to eight Grizzlies are expected to wrestle against the shorthanded Challengers.

Ashland, which has fared well in three previous tournaments including a sixth-place team finish in a recent 11-man event, has doubled its participation from a year ago to 23 wrestlers. The team is led by Josh Scarminach, the fifth-ranked 171-pounder in the state, 189-pounder Julian Ewald (8-2), heavyweight Joe Hatch (6-3) and 140-pounder Jake Scarminach (9-1).

Tuesday will mark Josh Scarminach's first match of the season; he's been out with football-related injuries.

"These guys, they're working really hard and it actually amazes me that htey came back with that kind of attitude and work ethic," Ashland head coach Bill Bowers said. "They're excited about the year and it's showing. We're going to bring wrestling back to the high school."

The match will also feature a brand new mat, purchased for the Grizzlies with a $10,000 grant from the Ashland Rotary Club.
