Ashlander fires gun at freeway

A 53-year-old Ashland man was arrested on Friday night after residents saw him driving recklessly and firing a gun at Interstate 5, near exit 14, police said.

Jay Milton was arrested at about 9 p.m. on Washington Street for driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and unlawful use of a firearm, according to the police report.

He was lodged at the Jackson County jail, where his blood alcohol content was determined to be .13 percent, above the .08 percent legal limit. His bail is set at $16,000.

No one was injured in the incident, Sgt. Scott Schuster with the Ashland Police Department said this morning.

Milton told officers that he was trying to shoot a skunk, he said. Officers aren't sure whether Milton fired the handgun while he was driving, Shuster said.

"We're glad nobody was inadvertently hurt," he said. "We don't know if he was really shooting at a skunk or not."

After neighbors alerted police to the reckless driver and gunshots in the area of Washington and Jefferson streets, officers found Milton driving in a field in the 700 block of Washington Street. He had put the gun away and "he had a camera in his hand at that point," Shuster said.

Officers found the .22 caliber handgun in Milton's truck and four shell casings nearby, evidence that Milton likely fired at least four shots, he said.

Shuster said the neighbors who alerted police to the reckless driver and the gunshots did the right thing.

"Definitely if people are seeing something that looks odd, especially when any kind of weapons are involved, they should be calling 911," he said.
