Ashlanders' son to be ordained

The son of two Ashland residents will be ordained to the priesthood on June 6.

Eric Watson, son of James and Susan Watson, is one of six men on the slate for ordination by Bishop William S. Skylstad of the Catholic Diocese of Spokane, who will ordain five other Jesuits to the priesthood on Saturday, June 6, at 10 a.m. The Mass of Ordination will be at St. Aloysius Parish church, 330 East Boone Avenue in Spokane, Washington. Other Jesuits to be ordained are Fernando Alvarez Lara, Joseph Carver, Dat Tran, Quan Tran and Christopher Hadley. The public is invited to attend.

Rev. Mr. Eric Watson, S.J., was born in 1966 in Des Moines, Iowa. He entered the Society of Jesus in August 2000 and professed first vows in August 2002. For the next two years, he studied philosophy and theology at Loyola University Chicago. Eric returned to the Northwest in 2004 and worked as a post- doctoral researcher at the University of Washington and then taught chemistry at Seattle University. He completed a master of divinity degree at Regis College in Toronto in May 2009. Prior to entering the Jesuits, Eric earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Oregon State University and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Brown University. A Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated on Sunday, June 7, 8:30 a.m., at St. Aloysius Church in Spokane, Washington. In the fall, Fr. Watson will begin a new assignment as assistant professor of chemistry at Seattle University.
