Bicyclist struck on Siskiyou

A 51-year-old man who was bicycling east on the Siskiyou Boulevard bike lane was struck by a Toyota 4runner late Friday afternoon.

The unidentified man was conscious and talking when the ambulance took him to the Ashland Community Hospital, Ashland Police Officer Teresa Selby said.

"He has injuries, but thank goodness he was talking," she said.

Police say 20-year-old Shawn Starrett was heading west on Siskiyou Boulevard when he made a left-hand turn onto Bellview Avenue, striking the bicyclist.

Starrett was visibly shaken after the accident as he stood next to his dark green vehicle with damage to the passenger side headlight, where police say the vehicle struck the victim.

"I come through here every day and I'm always careful to watch for people," Starrett said while being interviewed by police.

Ashland Police Officer Matt Caswell said it was too early to say whether charges will be filed.

"I'm just getting started on the investigation," he said.
