Elks Lodge set to host PRB auction for Grizz

The Pacific Rim Bowl Dinner and Auction, a key fundraiser in Ashland High's effort to send its football team to Japan this summer, will be held Saturday night at the Ashland Elks Lodge.

The Grizzlies will take on a Japan All-Star team in July in the 11th Pacific Rim Bowl. Each of the 50 players must raise $2,000 to make the trip.

Items that will be available in the auction, which begins at 6 p.m., include airline tickets, beach-side resort accommodations, autographed memorabilia and guided fishing trips. Tickets are $40 each or $300 for a table of eight. The cost includes dinner, drinks and admission to the silent and live auctions.

College Softball

Freshman pitcher Jordyn Kurtz got the Southern Oregon softball team off to a fast start as they swept Corban College 3-1 and 9-1 Friday in Salem.

Southern Oregon improved to 15-12 overall and 11-3 in the Cascade Conference, good enough for first place. Corban dropped to 18-18 overall and 6-8 in conference action.

Southern Oregon travels to preseason favorite and third-place Concordia Saturday.

In the opener, Kurtz limited the Raiders to just two hits and one run in the victory. The freshman struck out five Warriors and didn't walk a batter.

Kurtz also got it done with the bat, scoring all three SOU runs on a double in the first inning.

In the second game, junior Danielle Stratton got the bats going for the Raiders.

Stratton went 4-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Raider offense.

Senior Strohm Fouty and sophomores Meghan Laughlin and Justine Copper all had two hits a piece for SOU. Laughlin had her 13-game hitting streak snapped in the first game.

Girls Tennis

Ashland won three of four singles matches en route to a 5-3 District 4 victory over Thurston on Friday.

Casey Schein set the tone with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory over Natalie Smith in the No. 1 singles match.

Prep Equestrian

The Ashland High girls equestrian team, made up of 22 riders, competes in the district meet this weekend at the Expo Center in Central Point.

The Grizzlies, who are coached by Todd Steele, faced off against other area schools in the break-away roping, barrels and pole bending competitions, among others, on Friday and will be at the Expo again Saturday and Sunday.

The meet wraps up with the short programs, which begin at 11 a.m. Sunday. Saturday's lineup includes the equitation over fences, the saddle seat, the working rancher and showmanship.

The state meet will be held next weekend.

Ashland's seniors are: Victoria Goguen, Samantha Loper, Michele Kandaris, Salina Piddington, Kachina Rowland, Amanda Steele, Emily Steele, Shelby Temple and Nitia Wheeler.
