Facing the fire

Dressed in firefighter turnout suits and holding a hose full of water, Cub Scouts from Ashland's Cub Scout Pack 1 came face-to-face with a fire-breathing dragon Wednesday afternoon. The dragon, a fire simulation trainer tucked away in a trailer behind Ashland Fire Station 2, gave the children a chance to experience the dangers and power of fire.

For Ashland firefighter and paramedic Lance Menold, the Scouts' visit was an opportunity to teach young people about the importance of fire safety. Ashland Fire Marshal Margueritte Hickman said the department has increased its community service.

"Over the last couple of years, people have seen us out in the community more," she said. "We give about two or three tours month now. Community service is an inherent part of what we do here."
