Faith Street residence destroyed

A house fire broke out late Friday morning on Faith Avenue while the two residents of the rental property were away from home. They returned to find extensive damage, but no one was injured.

"The structure is significantly damaged, and no one can live there until it is repaired," said Fire Marshal Margueritte Hickman.

A neighbor called police at 11:51 a.m. after noticing smoke coming from the house at 775 Faith Avenue, then attempted to extinguish the fire with a garden hose before firefighters arrived shortly after, police said.

Nineteen firefighters and police officers responded to the scene, along with five engines and an ambulance. The fire was under control by 12:42 p.m., Hickman said. It was extinguished around 2:30 p.m., and the street was reopened around — p.m.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, and will likely not be available until next week, Hickman said.

The house is owned by 775 Faith Avenue LLC, a company with a mailing address in New York. The house had an assessed value of $155,960 and estimated market value of more than $300,000, according to Jackson County.
