Fire crews stop blaze before it spreads from cars to house

A woman and her three children had to escape out the back of their home when their family vehicles caught fire in the driveway Wednesday night while they slept.

A passerby reported a car fire in the 300 block of Oxford Street at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Ashland Fire & Rescue crews found a Toyota 4Runner engulfed in flames and fire spreading to a Chevy Astro van parked next to it, possibly threatening the home just feet away, fire officials said in a news release today.

The family was asleep inside, but got safely out the back door, officials said.

Firefighters had the fire out in 11 minutes, the release said. The blaze scorched the lawn and a nearby tree, but the well-maintained vegetation was fire resistant and helped protect the home, fire officials said. Both vehicles were destroyed.

Ashland Fire’s newest engine was first on scene and pumped water to its third fire in just over a week of operation, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
