Former Ashland golfer Johns named Big Sky all-star

Former Ashland High standout golfer Stephanie Johns, now a junior at Portland State, has been named first team All-Big Sky Conference as the league announced the awards in the run-up to next week's Big Sky Conference Golf Championship.

Johns leads the Vikings in scoring average this season with a 77.28 strokes per round mark. That ranks third-best in the league and third-best in school history at Portland State. She won the Bulldog and Eagle Invitational on Sept. 22-23 in Post Falls, ID, leading the Vikings to the tournament title as well.

A two-time Big Sky Player of the Week, Johns has been the Vikings' scoring leader in five of nine tournaments this season. In addition, she has the best single-round (70), 36-hole tournament (149) and 54-hole tournament (225) scores by a Viking in 2009.

Johns is the 10th different PSU golfer in nine years to earn All-Big Sky Conference honors. PSU players have won 18 all-conference awards over that span as well as four league titles since 2003.

Johns is in her first competitive season at Portland State. She was a redshirt last season after transferring from the University of Nevada.

Portland State will defend its 2007-08 Big Sky Conference Championship next week. The conference championship tournament will be held Monday through Wednesday at Ocotillo Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz.

PSU has been picked to place second in this year's tournament. The Big Sky Champion will earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Regional Golf Championship.

All-Conference honors were based on Golfstat player rankings.

Ashland put together a combined score of 350 to win the second Southern Sky Conference boys golf tournament of the season on Wednesday at Centennial Golf Course.
