Former Phoenix mayor dies at 83

Former Phoenix mayor Carlos DeBritto died Wednesday after a yearlong battle with cancer that found the octogenarian less and less in the public eye towards the end of his third and final term as mayor.

DeBritto spent more than a decade in city government and twice as long volunteering in various aspects of his community from garden and theater groups to helping at the community kitchen and planting trees in city parks.

DeBritto, who turned 83 in December, was elected mayor in 2006, after four years as council president. His final term ended at the end of 2012.

Known for his white, upturned mustache, broad smile and short stature, DeBritto was a familiar face at the community kitchen and held various leadership positions for the Ashland Elks Lodge.

His wife Jan DeBritto said the family was in the process of arranging a memorial service, open to community members who wish to attend, for Saturday, January 26.

Additional details will be announced in Friday's Mail Tribune.
