Fruit in Ashland ripe for the taking

Rolling Hills Farms sells apples, cherries and plums, but since 1986, only one fruit has earned Dave Belzburg of Rolling Hills Farm the nickname of The Peach Guy.

"We do some other fruits, but it's all about the peaches," Belzburg said. "We eat 'em by the ton."

Belzburg operates Rolling Hills Family Farm in Griffin Creek with his son, Mikey. On sale at their Saturday Growers Market stand were peaches of the P17 variety, which are the farm's earliest peach crop. The variety has yellow flesh, and Dave Belzburg emphasizes that all of his peaches are juicy and ready to eat.

Rolling Hills Family Farm can be found at the Tuesday and Saturday Growers Markets, and will have peaches in stock as the crop is available. Peach lovers should move quickly, however, as the Belzburgs sold out of peaches at the Saturday market.

The Growers Market is held on Tuesdays at the Ashland Armory, 1420 E. Main St., from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday Market is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot at the corner of Lithia and First streets. For more information, call 261-5045.
