Glover, Grants Pass hand Grizz worst loss since 2006

GRANTS PASS — Reigning Southwest Conference Player of the Year Tara Glover had three hits and scored four times as defending 6A state champion Grants Pass handed the Ashland High softball team its worst defeat in three seasons, 13-0, in a nonconference game that was shortened to five innings on Wednesday.

Cami Bennett, Krystin Jantzer and Jamie Gregory each had two hits for the Cavers (6-1), with Jantzer driving in four runs and Gregory three.

Ashland hadn't suffered such a one-sided loss since a 17-0 defeat to Crater on April 8, 2006 — exactly three years ago to the day. After going 41 straight games without being shutout, Ashland has now been blanked in two of its last three contests.

The Grizzlies (8-4) managed just two singles — one each by Piper Cantrell and Carley Santee — against GP junior Morgan Barnes (6-1). Santee was the lone Ashland runner to advance past first base, when she singled and reached second on a fielding error. Barnes struck out seven and walked just one in five innings.

Ashland starter Hayley Ross (1-2) surrendered all 13 runs — 11 earned — and 13 hits.

The Cavers scored twice in each of the first two innings before breaking the game open with a nine-run fourth in which they sent 13 batters to the plate and collected nine hits.

Ashland opens Southern Sky Conference play on Saturday, facing defending Class 5A state champion Crater in a doubleheader in Central Point beginning at noon.

Ashland's first Southern Sky home doubleheader is April 18 against Mazama.
