Green chosen for NY Times' leadership academy

Ashland Daily Tidings Content Editor Mike Green has been selected as one of four news managers across the nation to attend the New York Times Leadership Academy.

In only its second year, the New York Times Leadership Academy, presented in conjunction with the National Association of Black Journalists, is an all-expense-paid management training workshop spread over the months of December, January and March. From Dec. 5 through 8, Green will attend seminars at the New York Times and work in various departments, including the copy desk and new media. In January, and again in March, Green will go to Harvard University for two nine-day management training programs at the Maynard Institute's Media Academy with top media professionals.

In addition, the four chosen news managers will be flown to Chicago, Ill. in August for the 2008 UNITY Convention, where they will present what they've learned.

"I am excited to enhance my skills through training at the top tier of the media industry," Green said. "I owe a debt of gratitude to my editor for his terrific support, which helped bring about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I am constantly amazed at the achievements made by this newsroom and look forward to bringing to Ashland new ideas and some of the methodologies practiced at the highest echelon of our industry."

The Leadership Academy is an annual program limited to four news managers, all of whom must have between two to five years of experience in a news management position. It is designed to provide the skills necessary to lead in a fast-changing media world. The group will explore a range of topics including: newsroom leadership, setting goals and executing a vision, business realities of the news industry, conflict management, and new media and the Web.

"The Ashland Daily Tidings and Mail Tribune seek to constantly improve the skills of its journalists through training programs, seminars and conferences," Andrew Scot Bolsinger, editor of the Tidings said. "It is with high regard that we acknowledge Green's selection by The New York Times."

Other journalists selected for the 2007-08 New York Times Leadership Academy are: LaShara Bunting, Asst. Culture Editor at the New York Times; Jeffrey Martin, sports reporter at the Wichita Eagle; and Merissa Green, news reporter at the Lakeland Ledger.
