Grizz boys third, girls sixth at NW Classic

The Ashland High boys cross country team placed third and the Ashland girls took sixth in the Northwest Cross Country Classic on Saturday at Lane Community College in Eugene.

Seniors Wilder Schaaf and Paul Schwarzer led the Grizz boys in the 5-kilometer race, with Schaaf finishing fifth in 16 minutes, 20 seconds and Schwarzer finishing eighth in 16:30. Three more Grizzlies finished in the top 40: senior Cord Walsh placed 34th in 17:25; sophomore Sam Jackson placed 35th in 17:27; and junior Colin Haug placed 40th in 17:30.

Rogue River's Cole Watson won the boys race in 15:46 and Crater's Max Runia was the top placer out of the Southern Sky Conference, finishing third in 16:12.

In the girls race, sophomore Mia O'Dougherty led the Grizzlies with a ninth-place finish in 20:19 and senior Camelia Mayfield was 15th in 20:36. Also placing in the top 40 for the AHS girls were Marshall Miller (21:42) and Hannah Ewing (21:46).

Erin McLaughlin of Milwaukie won the girls race in 19:13 and Jessica Vig (third place, 19:44) of Crater was the top Southern Sky Conference placer.

Prep Water Polo

The Ashland High boys water polo team opened its Southern League season with three lopsided road victories over the weekend.

The Grizzlies trounced Cottage Grove 12-5, North Eugene 12-8 and Marist 12-4 to improve to 5-1 overall.

The Ashland girls also raced out to a fast start in league play, beating Cottage Grove 11-5, North Eugene 6-3 and Marist 11-4 to improve to 4-0 overall.

Wynn Michael provided a big chunk of the offense for the Grizz boys. He scored nine goals in the three league games and three more in a nonconference loss to South Eugene. Forrest Kollar added seven goals combined against North Eugene and Marist and four steals against Cottage Grove, and Jake Gavin scored three goals against Cottage Grove and two against Marist. Also for Ashland, Lucas Opgenorth scored five goals against North Eugene.

The Ashland girls were led by Smith Freeman and goalkeeper Carlie Santee. Freeman scored 13 goals in the three league games and five more in a nonconference win over Sheldon, while Santee blocked 63 shots in SL play.

Kalli Walker and Sarah Kasiah also stepped up for the Grizz girls. Walker scored four goals against Marist and three, to go with three steals, against Cottage Grove, while Kasiah notched two goals and five steals against North Eugene, five goals against Sheldon and two goals against Marist.

The Ashland boys will compete in the Wood Creek Invitational in Rosevilley, Calif., this weekend, while the girls are off until Oct. 8, when they'll host Medford.
