Grizzlies control net in league opener

Ashland High senior middle Sam Boehnke put away nine kills and helped the Grizzlies dominate the net for the second match in a row in a Southern Oregon Conference-opening win over Crater Thursday at Mountain Avenue Gym.

The Grizzlies (2-0) finished with 16 blocks in the 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 SOC rout.

"The girls' goal for themselves today was consistency and I would say that they met their goal, definitely," Ashland head coach Emily Stone said. "We made sure we were playing on our toes and kept Crater on their heels. I think they played a very solid match. That was the most consistent I've seen them play or practice."

Junior setter Cassie Hall led Ashland with 14 assists, senior setter Danit Hubbell added seven assists and three aces and senior outside hitter Mo Keller had seven kills for the Grizzlies, who travel to face Eagle Point on Tuesday.

The match was the first head-to-head clash between the longtime rivals since the most recent reclassification. While both schools compete in the SOC hybrid, Crater moved up to the 6A classification while Ashland remained a 5A.

Stone said Ashland handled the pressure of league play well.

"You know, there was extra energy, but they harnessed it and used it to be productive, which is hard to do," she said.

Southern Oregon used a overtime header by Stacy Szeto to score a 2-1 victory over Hope International Thursday at University Field.

Southern Oregon improved to 3-1-1 on the season and will host Pacific University Sunday at 1 p.m. Hope International dropped to 1-2.

Szeto's goal led the Raiders to their third straight win. During that stretch SOU has allowed one goal.

"We've improved dramatically on our set pieces and now we are getting the opportunity to win games that we haven't in the past," SOU head coach Jon Clement said. "Our tempo is still off and I think our best soccer is yet to come."

After a scoreless first half, the Raiders jumped on the board first at the 56 minute mark as Alexis Mahoney put on a series on impressive one-on-one moves to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.

Hope equaled the score at the 73-minute mark on a goal by Hillary LaMont from inside the box.

The score remained tied through regulation and the first overtime period before Szeto corralled a loose ball in front of the net and headed in the game-winner.

Denise Powell led the SOU offensive attack with three shots, while junior goalkeeper Jessica Kuehlwein turned in four saves.
