Ashland scored two touchdowns in a 38-second span to break open a tight game en route to a 35-14 nonconference win over Roosevelt, Friday night at Walter A. Phillips Field.

8217; lead to 14-7 with 8:50 to go in the third quarter. Ashland took over from there.
First, Lewis Sebrell&
8217;s 4-yard plunge capped a seven-play, 40-yard drive with 11:56 to go in the fourth. Then, Sam Gaviglio recovered a Roosevelt fumble at the 12 and three plays later Ashland quarterback Matt Dierks sliced in from 1-yard out to give the Grizzlies a 27-7 cushion.

8217;s 21-point knockout rally with 6:43 left.
8220;(Roosevelt) sort of made some mistakes tonight and that was the difference in the game, I think,&
8221; said Ashland head coach Charlie Hall, whose team improved to 4-0. &
8220;We really capitalized on the mistakes that they made and covered the ball deep in their own territory.&
Sebrell gained 51 yards on 12 carries and receiver Josh Hogeland caught four passes for 71 yards and a score to lead the No. 7-ranked Grizzlies, who never trailed after Max Gordon&
8217;s 55-yard interception return crashed Roosevelt&
8217;s first possession just two minutes into the game. Hogeland also racked up 93 yards worth of returns, including a 44-yard punt return the right sideline that set up the Grizzlies&
8217; final score.

8221; Hogeland said of his long return. &
8220;I think Will had a great block on (Javon Johnson) and I just wanted it so bad. It was an awesome play.&
Malley rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. He also led the Roughriders&
8217; defense with 6&

Roosevelt (0-3) outgained Ashland 227 to 126 on the ground, but turned the ball over three times and gained just 14 yards through the air.
Out sick early in the week, Ashland quarterback Matt Dierks finished 15-for-23 for 144 yards and one touchdown after sitting out the first series. The offense never lived up to its early success, however. An 8-play, 72-yard drive gave the Grizzlies a quick 14-0 lead, but Roosevelt blanked Ashland on its next seven possessions.
8220;I thought we could have played a lot better,&
8221; said Sam Gaviglio, who caught three passes for 28 yards and punted three times for a 39.7 yards-per-punt average. &
8220;We were a little slow to pick it up until the fourth quarter. I think we underestimated them. We just weren&
8217;t focused enough.&
8217;t have a problem motivating itself for its next game, Friday against Marshfield. The Pirates destroyed the Grizzlies 33-7 last season.
