Hedges in sixth place at 5A state

CORVALLIS — Ashland junior Matt Hedges shot a 3-over-par 75 to finish the first of his two rounds at the Class 5A boys golf state championships in sixth place at Trysting Tree Golf Club.

Hedges stands six shots off the pace set by West Albany's Conner Kumpula, who fired a 3-under 69.

Hedges began his round on the back nine, opening with a bogey and then a birdie. Bogeys on hole Nos. 13-14 were offset by a birdie on the par-5 15th hole as Hedges made the turn at 1 over.

On the front nine, a bogey and double bogey on the third and fourth holes, respectively, were countered by a birdie on the par-4 sixth hole to steady his round.

Hedges captured the District 1 championship May 3 at Eagle Point Golf Club.

In the last at-bat of her Ashland career, Kim Corey hit her first career home run deep over the left-field wall at North Mountain Park, the lone bright spot in a 12-1 nonconference loss to Crater on Monday.

The five-inning game was the season finale for the Grizzlies (7-17).
