Humphrey, Hansen spearhead Mustangs at Reno

RENO, Nev. — The Medford Mustangs split a pair of games Friday in the Reno Invitational but received the No. 1 pool seed because of the tiebreaker procedures.

The Mustangs defeated the San Mateo, Calif., Bulldogs, 7-2, then dropped a 4-3 decision to the host Reno Knights at Reno High School.

The loss to Reno gave the Mustangs a 2-1 record in pool play which tied them with Reno and Red Bluff. Medford was awarded the top seed because it allowed fewer runs than the other two teams.

Medford (14-10) plays Weins Baseball from Santa Clara, Calif., in a bracket game at 9 this morning.

Against San Mateo, Charlie Walker, Taylor Humphrey and Billy Hansen all went 2-for-3. Humphrey also stole three bases.

Medford received strong relief performances from AJ Doolittle and Steen Fredrickson. Doolittle got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth without allowing a run and retired the side in order with two strikeouts in the next inning. Fredrickson struck out the side in the seventh.

In the second game, Medford scored one run to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh but Reno ruined a strong pitching performance by Jamie Flynn with a winning two-run rally in the bottom of the inning.

Cody Hoff singled with one out in the seventh for the Mustangs, moved to second on an infield out then scored on Humphrey's RBI double.

Flynn hit Connor Bush to open the seventh for Reno and committed a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt that sent runners to second and third. Pinch-hitter Chip Bouchard blooped single over third to score both runners.

The Mustangs scored two runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Walker led off with a home run, Schlecht doubled and Hansen delivered an RBI double.

Jessie Hornbrook collected two hits for the Mustangs.
